Life Groups

Spiritual growth happens best when we “do life” with others who are committed to each other and to the four practices which help us to “abide in” Christ (John 15:5). Life Groups provide an avenue for you to study the Bible, build relationships and share praise and prayer requests.

Life Group values consist of affirmation, availability, honesty, in-depth Bible study, openness, participation, prayer, safety, sensitivity and transparency. You can read more about Life Group values here.

Membership

How do I join?

We believe the church is a community of people who have trusted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior and have been baptized as believers by immersion as a public testimony of their decision to follow Christ. Therefore, a person may be received as a candidate for membership to South Oaks Baptist Church in any one of the following ways:

By Profession

Any person professing faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior may be received into the fellowship of our church by scriptural baptism. Scriptural baptism occurs after a person has become a believer and is by immersion.

By Letter

Members who are in good standing with another Baptist church and have been scripturally baptized will be received into the fellowship upon receipt of a letter of transfer from their former church.

By Statement

Admission into the membership may be by personal statement, satisfactory to this church, that the person confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and has been scripturally baptized.

Invitation or Time of Response

At the end of each worship service, there is an opportunity for you to respond publicly to God’s work in your life. A song will be sung and members of the staff will be standing at the front of the sanctuary. The pastor will ask if anyone wishes to come forward. You may come forward at this time and share your response or request with the pastor. A deacon will then pray privately with you about your response or request. You will not be asked to speak publicly nor embarrassed in any way. You will be loved, cared for, and encouraged. Coming forward during this time is the primary way most people join our church. If you are uncomfortable coming forward during this time, please use the tear off portion of the bulletin to indicate your response. Someone will contact you to answer questions you may have and to pray with you.

Membership Class

Another way to join our church and obtain answers to your questions is to attend our membership class, Discover South Oaks. This class explains membership as well as other matters related to our church. At the end of the class, you will be given the opportunity to join our church in a small group setting. For information about the dates of this class, please contact the church office at office@southoaks.org

Serve

Serving is scriptural. South Oaks has opportunities to serve both outside and inside the church. To learn more about how you can serve the community and world, check out our Missions page. If you would like to serve within the church, please let us know at office@southoaks.org, and someone will get in contact with you. For anyone interested in serving in the children’s area, screening, including a background check, and training will be required.
